SIDING FIBRE CEMENT VS. WOOD

SIDING FIBRE CEMENT VS. WOOD

Your home’s siding is a big job to do. It is responsible for keeping moisture outside while helping to keep energy inside. If you’re siding is no longer doing it’s job, you should have it replaced as soon as possible. If you wait, moisture can enter your home and cause all kinds of expensive damage.

Two popular siding options are fibre cement siding and wood siding. Both have their pros and cons.  Ridgewater shares more information to help you choose the siding project that is best for you:

Wood Siding

Wood siding is a popular choice in British Columbia. It gives a rich and timeless look that seems to match perfectly with the natural landscapes we have in BC. You can choose between wood shingle or shake siding, wood board-and-batten siding, wood tongue-and-groove siding, wood plank siding and even wood split log or half log siding.  You can also choose from a variety of wood types including cedar, redwood, fir, pine and spruce.

Not only does it look great, wood siding is a practical choice. Wood is a natural insulator, which means your home will stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also ‘breathes’ which helps your home circulate air better. Some wood types, like cedar, are naturally resistant to insects, rot and mildew.

Wood is also a greener option compared to other siding materials. It doesn’t emit any harmful chemicals and it is 100% biodegradable, meaning old wood siding will just return to the earth if it ever goes to a landfill.

The cons? Wood siding requires more maintenance than vinyl or fiber cement siding. To keep it looking great, you’ll have to paint or stain it every few years. This also helps protect the siding from insects, warping and rot. Without regular protection, your wood siding could rot, twist or even allow water in. Wood siding is also not fire proof.

Fibre Cement Siding

If you want a maintenance-free siding option, fibre cement is for you. It is the most durable siding product on the market. It is completely resistant to fire, rot, warping, cracking, insects and other pests. All you’ll have to do to keep it looking great is to wash it down each spring with a garden hose or pressure washer.

Fibre cement siding is also versatile in colours and design. From vertical and horizontal siding to shakes and singles, you have plenty choose from. You can choose to have it primed and painted, installed in the exact colour of your choosing. It can even mimic the look of wood siding, manufactured with a variety of wood grains and textures.

Fiber cement siding is energy efficient and will give your home’s exterior great aesthetic appeal.

The cons? Fiber cement siding can be more expensive depending on the style and size of your home. It is also more difficult to install, making labour costs more expensive. While fiber cement is very durable, the finish can chip with impacts and will have to be repainted or replaced.
